Dr. Anurag Agarwal is a cancer specialist, board-certified in both Radiation-Oncology and Internal Medicine. His areas of interest include proton-beam radiation, stereotactic radiosurgery and gene therapy. He was raised in South Florida, and has strong ties to Broward County. His parents are both physicians, practicing and living in South Florida for several decades. Dr. Agarwal's wife is a physician and on faculty at the University of Miami School of Medicine. His mother-in-law is a physician, who has been on the medical staff of Broward Health, and his father-in-law is a Professor at FAU.
Dr. Agarwal attended the George Washington University in Washington, DC on a Presidential Honors Scholarship, majoring in Philosophy. He went to medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Care Sciences. He completed his radiation oncology training at The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, which is internationally regarded as one of the leading academic centers for gene therapy and stereotactic radiosugery, using both CyberKnife and Gamma-Knife stereotactic radiosurgery technologies. He then completed fellowship training in the ultra sub-specialized field of proton beam radiation therapy at Harvard Medical School at the Massachusetts General Hospital, an institution to which he retains strong links.
For decades, Harvard has been using protons in the battle against cancer. Dr. Agarwal's passion for the use of proton beam therapy in the treatment of adult and pediatric patients stems partly from the fact proton beam therapy has demonstrated virtually no "exit dose" beyond the tumor location, resulting in the minimization of growth abnormalities and side-effects to nearby normal tissues. This technology makes radiation therapy a much safer, and more effective tool, for children afflicted by treatable tumors.
Proton technology has thus far been limited to only a handful of large academic centers in North America, making the supply of experienced and qualified physicians limited. Broward Health will be the first and only hospital in South Florida to offer the therapy.
